Project Background
Ground Civil Consultant Engineers was initially engaged to provide stormwater and earthworks design for a proposed modular office at 45 APAC Way, Perth Airport. The site falls within the jurisdiction of Perth Airport Pty Ltd (PAPL).
Ground Civil succeeded in negotiating a favourable outcome with the PAPL, avoiding the need for additional drainage works on site. Further to this, Ground Civil has also proposed a screw piling solution for the modular office which negate the requirement for costly earthworks and retaining structures.
Subsequently, the client has requested Ground Civil to assist with pavement remediation, which has failed on several occasions.
Basis of Design (BoD)
The key design challenges are high wheel loads on the 8t Forklift and the 15t Franna, coupled with low strength subgrade (natural surface) with high reactivity and high groundwater with seasonal fluctuations (up to 3-4m seasonal changes based on Department of Water and Environmental Regulations mapping).
The HIPAVE mechanistic design is the most ideal pavement type for the load. It is intended as a permanent solution with minimal maintenance.
TensarPave is a pavement design program developed by Tensar Corporation (Tensar). Tensar is the supplier of the geogrid system, designed to reduce pavement design on poor subgrade condition. The product is marketed by Geofabrics in Western Australia. For this site, Tensar designs are undertaken directly by the suppliers.
The empirical USBM design method is intended for a cost-effective solution, the design method is more commonly adopted in mine sites where pavement longevity is not considered. This solution requires regular maintenance.
The above provides a range of solutions to enable the client to consider cost vs benefit to the remediation.
